Marbella has been the setting for the announcement by the Junta of Andalucía regarding La Bajadilla Port. The Public Agency of Ports of Andalucía has managed to unblock the expansion and transformation project of this port, with a new concessionaire taking control of the facilities from January 1.
The Minister of Development and Mobility, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, visited the port alongside the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and highlighted the importance of this award. An investment of over €200 million is expected, which will increase the port's capacity from 268 to 750 berths.
Project Details
Muñoz-Atanet assured that this expansion will nearly triple the current capacity, allowing for the arrival of larger vessels. He recalled that this project was initiated 16 years ago but had been stalled until the current Government resumed its processing in 2019.
According to the minister, the recovery of this project reflects the commitment of Juanma Moreno's Government to revitalise the port infrastructures of the region. This initiative is intended to be an economic engine for the Costa del Sol.
The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, described the concession as great news for the city, highlighting the joint effort between the City Council and the Junta of Andalucía to overcome administrative and judicial obstacles.
Impact on the Community
The works will include a new marina with 750 berths, capable of accommodating recreational boats, large yachts, and cruise ships. Significant port engineering interventions will also be carried out, such as the construction of a main breakwater and various infrastructures, aimed at improving the port's capacity.
In addition to Muñoz-Atanet and Ángeles Muñoz, several representatives from the Junta were also present during the visit, including the Deputy Minister of Development and Mobility and the General Director of the APPA, who emphasised the project's relevance for the economic and tourist development of Marbella.
