Campers in Plaza de la Constitución decide in assembly to continue the protest for another night and call for a large demonstration this Saturday at 7:00 PM. They denounce that at least 30 evictions occur weekly in Málaga.
The camp for the right to housing set up in the Plaza de la Constitución in Málaga will continue for at least one more night. This was decided by the participants in an assembly held this Tuesday, attended by more than a hundred people, according to Diario Sur. In the meeting, they agreed to keep the tents erected since Monday night and to call for a large demonstration this Saturday starting at 7:00 PM through the streets of the city centre.
The protest began at the end of the demonstration called on Monday to demand decent housing. Under the slogan "not one more eviction", participants set up around twenty tents in the central square. The protesters claim that the police "besieged the square with barriers and did not allow people to enter" and that they have felt "blackmailed and threatened".
"This square is ours, this city is ours and we are not going to leave"
The campers have set three objectives: minimum agreements to ensure that there are no more evictions, indefinite rentals, and an immediate reduction in rental prices linked to criteria such as the minimum wage. "When we mobilise, we are capable of stopping everything," they assert.
The spokesperson for the Tenants' Union, Carmela Olmedo, described the mobilization as "an absolute outcry from the people saying enough is enough". In the same vein, the spokesperson for A roof by right, Ysabel Torralbo, recalled that at least 30 evictions per week are recorded in Málaga and warned that each one "takes the life of that person". Torralbo explained that they have requested a meeting with the mayor to demand solutions to these cases.
The organizers are also working on building a general strike for housing and believe that the unions should call it. A new assembly is scheduled for this Wednesday at 7:30 PM in the square itself, where they will decide the next steps for the camp.
