The Civil Guard has intercepted and confiscated a vessel in the south of Gran Canaria that was transporting over three tonnes of cocaine. The operation took place on September 4, 2026, and resulted in the arrest of five individuals linked to drug trafficking.
Agents from the Maritime Service identified the semi-rigid boat that was sailing about seventy miles south of the island. Upon realising it was a possible case of drug trafficking, they proceeded to signal it to stop. However, the boat attempted to flee, triggering a pursuit by the Civil Guards.
Arrest of the drug traffickers
The five crew members of the narco boat, aged between 21 and 41, were arrested after executing several evasive maneuvers that failed to prevent their capture. Onboard the vessel, two long guns were also found, an assault rifle and a light machine gun, suggesting an intention to protect against possible assaults from other criminal organisations.
The detainees have been charged with several offences, including drug trafficking, serious disobedience, illegal possession of firearms, and belonging to a criminal organisation. They are expected to appear before a judge in the coming days.

The seizure of 139 bales of cocaine, totalling 3,360 kilos, highlights the complexity and risk involved in the fight against drug trafficking in the region. The possession of long guns by civilians is completely prohibited in Spain, which adds severity to the situation of the detainees.
