The San Juan de Dios Assistance Centre in Málaga will celebrate the third Week Against Unwanted Loneliness from October 19 to 25, with activities to raise awareness about a problem that affects society as a whole.
The San Juan de Dios Assistance Centre in Málaga has organised the third edition of the Week Against Unwanted Loneliness, which will take place from October 19 to 25 with a series of events to highlight this issue and engage society. According to Diario Sur, the initiative is expanding for the first time to centres in Seville, Málaga, Granada, Córdoba, and Santander, after having been developed in Barcelona, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Cornellà, Lleida, Manresa, Mallorca, Zaragoza, and Valencia.
Among the activities planned in the capital of Málaga is the presentation of a short film that will premiere at the Málaga Film Festival and features stories of people living in the Psychogeriatrics unit of the centre. The aim is to eliminate stigma and generate empathy towards those suffering from unwanted loneliness.
Additionally, the action 'Plazas contra la soledad. Un café en compañía' has been launched, where users from the three centres in Málaga will share a coffee with citizens. The meeting will take place on October 19 in the morning at the esplanade of El Corte Inglés. This is a simultaneous proposal that will be replicated in squares across the country through the Solidarity area of San Juan de Dios.
"Loneliness is a subjective perception of the person related to a mismatch between the quantity and quality of social relationships they have and those they would like to have," states San Juan de Dios.
This perception can be compounded by social isolation, an objective state that does not depend on personal perception and relates to the absence of a support network. Therefore, the entity emphasises the importance of discussing the problem, making help visible to break the stigma, promoting early detection, and activating resources for prevention and support.
Users of the Homeless Shelter will also participate in the week with an afternoon of cinema at the Rosaleda multiplex.
