The sister of the late Juan Manuel Gutiérrez, Pilar Gutiérrez Cruz, is the only candidate to lead the brotherhood of Palm Sunday. The elections will be held on October 24 at the brotherhood house.
The Brotherhood of the Prendimiento of Málaga will hold extraordinary elections on October 24 to elect its new senior sister. The deadline for submitting candidacies closed this week with a single candidate: Pilar Gutiérrez Cruz, sister of the late Juan Manuel Gutiérrez and current prosecutor of the governing board, as Diario Sur has learned.
The candidacy must be approved by the Diocese of Málaga before the voting takes place. The elections will be held at the brotherhood house, located at number 1 on Jesús del Prendimiento street, from 12 to 20 hours.
Juan Manuel Gutiérrez passed away last July at the age of 62, which necessitated the calling of this extraordinary electoral process. Last Friday, he received a posthumous tribute during a funeral mass at the parish of Divina Pastora and Santa Teresa de Jesús, officiated by the parish priest Rafael Pérez Pallarés. During the ceremony, the brotherhood awarded him the gold medal and named him honorary senior brother.
With Pilar Gutiérrez at the helm, a new chapter opens for the brotherhood. Last June, due to her brother's deteriorating health, the brotherhood convened an extraordinary meeting to discuss a possible earlier start time for the Palm Sunday procession, which ultimately did not take place. Sources consulted by this newspaper indicate that the Prendimiento does not plan to implement that change for Holy Week 2027.
The meeting to set the times and routes for next year's Palm Sunday is postponed until the new governing board is appointed in the coming weeks.
