The Málaga City Council has confirmed that it will plant a medium-sized tree to replace the ficus in Juan Ruiz Sánchez square, which had to be felled after a structural failure was detected that compromised its stability and posed a risk to pedestrians.
The breakage of one of its main axes on August 31 caused the structural failure. According to technical reports, it was not possible to correct the damage through conservation measures that provided sufficient guarantees, so maintaining the specimen with a level of safety compatible with public space use was ruled out.
The tree was listed and subjected to periodic inspections. In the last review, conducted on June 22, it showed high vitality and no recent damage was found that would justify intervention. The incident occurred just two months after that review.
The new planting will be carried out as soon as possible, as soon as the appropriate weather conditions are met to ensure the specimen's rooting.
The City Council has intensified the monitoring and control of urban trees to reduce the risk of falls and prevent similar situations in other parts of the city.
