The Málaga City Council will compensate the 35 families who signed their mortgage for a VPO on Ingeniero Garnica street, delivered two years late. The works will be completed by October 30.
The councillor for Housing of the Málaga City Council, Paco Pomares, announced this Thursday in the ordinary plenary that the City Council will compensate the 35 families who signed to acquire a VPO on Ingeniero Garnica street, whose delivery deadline expired on June 30, 2024 and which, as of September 2026, are still not finished, according to Diario Sur.
The councillor did not specify the amount of the compensation, which will be discussed in the board of the Municipal Housing Society with the opposition groups. Pomares acknowledged the delay: "I have to apologise again for the unjustified delay," attributing it to bad luck with the UTE formed by Grupo Ferson and Ogensa.
"We have hired the local company Vera, much more responsible, who will leave them in good condition; there is a commitment, the 35 homes will be finished by October 30"
On July 16, the Municipal Housing Institute signed the completion contract with the construction companies, but Pomares specified that there were still works to be executed. The company Vera will handle the finishing touches through a minor contract of 40,000 euros and will continue to provide service to the families once they move in, in case any issues arise.
The councillor explained that the bankruptcy of Ferson left the contract in the hands of Ogensa, which slowed down the work and caused the two-year delay. The compensation will be made effective to the families "for an exceptional delay, but we owe it to them," he added. The socialist spokesperson, Mariano Ruiz Araujo, called for penalties against Ferson and Ogensa for negligence and urged the PP government team to abandon the "urban project accelerators" and set up a "VPO accelerator".
The socialist motion was passed unanimously, approving all points to improve access to housing in Málaga. Among them, that the City Council negotiates with CaixaBank so that the families of Ingeniero Garnica maintain the conditions of their mortgage two years later, something that Pomares assured had already been done.
The affected Andrés Francisco Castellano and José Fernández Lara recounted their situation. The former lives in a 30-square-metre flat with high rent: "We are at our limit. My four-month-old daughter should have been born in her home, in her room." The latter asked when and how they would be compensated.
Pomares highlighted that in three years the City Council has awarded 1,406 homes through public competition. The Municipal Housing Society had an initial budget of 28.8 million to invest in housing and by June 30 of this year had already executed 16.6 million, 56%. The councillor responded to the spokesperson of Con Málaga, Nico Sguiglia, who had estimated the execution rate of the IMV at 3.6%.
The works on the 35 homes will be completed by October 30, according to the municipal commitment. The families should then receive the keys, and from that moment on, Vera will continue to address any potential final touches.
