Málaga Regional University Hospital has carried out a complex surgical intervention to remove a heart tumour measuring over 11 centimetres. The patient, who has progressed favourably, has already been discharged after completing her recovery.

Details of the intervention

The heart tumour, originating in the cardiac muscle itself, reached exceptional dimensions and occupied considerable space within the pericardium, the membrane surrounding the heart. The growth of this lesion caused compression of the right ventricle, which is responsible for pumping blood to the lungs. Its complexity increased because it was vascularised by vessels from the coronary arteries.

The surgery, performed in June by the Cardiovascular Surgery Service, required careful dissection with the aim of completely removing the tumour while preserving healthy heart tissue. After the removal, the medical team reconstructed the affected area to maintain cardiac anatomy and functionality.

The importance of teamwork

Enrique Ruiz, head of the Cardiovascular Surgery Service, highlighted the importance of meticulous planning and collaboration among more than eleven professionals, including cardiovascular surgeons, anaesthetists, and nursing staff. Esteban Sarria, one of the surgeons, emphasised the main challenge of the intervention, which consisted of removing a large mass close to important structures of the heart.

Although heart tumours are rare pathologies, this case is particularly exceptional due to the size of the tumour. The successful surgery reinforces the expertise of the Cardiovascular Surgery Service at Málaga Regional University Hospital, which has performed over 10,500 cardiac interventions since its founding in 1980.

The hospital is also a reference in the treatment of aortic aneurysms and in the use of ECMO therapy for critically ill patients, demonstrating its commitment to advanced and specialised care.
