The Málaga researcher Juan Luis Paris, from the Biomedical Research Institute of Málaga (IBIMA), has been awarded the Málaga Research Award 2026 in the Sciences category. This award, granted by the Málaga Foundation, recognises his career in the development of nanoparticles to improve the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases.
Recognition of research in nanomedicine
The awarded work is titled ‘Design, preparation and evaluation of nanoparticles for the improvement of diagnosis and therapy of allergic diseases’. This project focuses on the application of nanomedicine to create tools that advance the understanding and treatment of these pathologies, highlighting the innovation and translational approach of his research.
Juan Luis Paris has emphasised that this recognition is a support for the collective effort of his team and the importance of the research being developed in Málaga. “Our goal is to take advantage of the possibilities offered by nanomedicine to generate new tools that allow us to better understand allergic diseases,” he stated.
International career and recent achievements
With an academic background that includes his doctoral thesis at the Complutense University of Madrid and experience at centres such as Boston Children’s Hospital and the University of Oxford, Paris has addressed various applications of nanomedicine, including cancer and gene therapy. Currently, his focus is mainly on allergic diseases.
The Málaga Research Award adds to other milestones in his career, such as the ERC Starting Grant he received in September 2025 from the European Research Council. This recognition, endowed with 1.7 million euros, has strengthened IBIMA's capacity to develop innovative and competitive projects at the European level.
The Málaga Foundation has highlighted the importance of Juan Luis Paris's scientific work in improving diagnostics and treatments, emphasising his role in advancing biomedical research from Málaga.
