Málaga Regional Hospital Establishes Itself as a Leader in Medical Oncology

In Málaga, the Medical Oncology Service of the Regional University Hospital has reached a new level of recognition by obtaining the Excellent Quality Certification from the Andalusian Health Quality Agency (ACSA). This seal is the highest level that can be achieved in the Andalusian model of certification for clinical management units.

This achievement places the service in an exclusive group of Andalusian hospital units that have attained this distinction, which endorses a care model focused on continuous improvement, innovation, and research. The certification will be valid for five years and evaluates compliance with various quality standards in multiple areas, including organization and patient safety.

Additional Recognitions

In addition to the ACSA accreditation, the Medical Oncology Service has received other notable recognitions. Among them is the international QOPI (Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) accreditation awarded by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the hospital's candidacy as a European Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

These distinctions strengthen the positioning of Málaga Regional University Hospital as a reference centre in oncology, integrating care, research, teaching, and innovation into its care model.

Activity and Commitment to Research

During the year 2025, the Oncology Service attended to 1,925 new patients in outpatient consultations and conducted a total of 37,586 consultations between the Civil Hospital and the Maternal and Child Hospital. In the Day Medical Hospital, 3,050 new patients received treatment, with a total of 14,546 administrations in the same period.

The service also stands out for its research activity, with 87 open clinical trials and a considerable scientific output published in international journals. These initiatives allow patients early access to new therapeutic alternatives, in addition to contributing to advancements in the field of oncology.

Álvaro Montesa, head of the Medical Oncology Service, stated that “the Excellent certification recognises the efforts of professionals in providing safer, evidence-based oncology care.” Meanwhile, José Antonio Ortega, managing director of the hospital, noted that “achieving the highest level of certification reflects the professionals' commitment to excellence in care.”
