Málaga Celebrates Archaeology Day with Exhibitions on the Dolmens of Antequera

Exhibition at Madinat al-Zahra and Itálica

On August 18, Málaga will be the stage for the celebration of Archaeology Day, where exhibitors will be set up in the archaeological sites of Madinat al-Zahra and Itálica. These installations will showcase images and data about the Dolmens of Antequera, which this year commemorates its tenth anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Ministry of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport of Andalusia has designed this initiative to highlight the importance of cultural spaces managed by the Junta de Andalucía. Patricia del Pozo, the Minister of Culture, stated that this day is key to advocating for archaeological heritage as a cultural, educational, and economic driver for the region.

Educational and Cultural Activities

During the celebration, in addition to the outdoor exhibition, the Archaeological Ensemble of the Dolmens of Antequera will carry out the workshop ‘Archaeologist for a Day’, an activity aimed at bringing the public closer to the work of archaeologists. On the other hand, the Archaeological Ensemble of Carmona will offer the activity ‘A Look at the Sky from the Necropolis’, which will include astronomical observations.

The choice of August 18 for the celebration is due to the feast day of Saint Helena of the Cross, recognised as the first to excavate in search of ancient objects. It also commemorates the Syrian archaeologist Khaled al Asaad, who was murdered in 2015 for protecting his country’s cultural heritage.

The exhibition will include images of the five fundamental elements of the site: the dolmens of Menga and Viera, the tholos of El Romeral, the Peña de los Enamorados, and the Sierra de El Torcal. The photographs have been selected and are the work of photographers Javier Pérez González and Javier Coca Ávila, who have collaborated in promoting these sites as World Heritage.

QR codes have been placed on the exhibitors, allowing visitors to access more information about the site and its features in various languages. With these actions, the Junta de Andalucía aims to strengthen collaboration between the archaeological sites and enrich the cultural offering of the community.
