The Málaga City Council has published the guidelines for the allocation of 202 protected rental homes in the University sector, with rents between €446 and €511. The application period begins on July 13.

The Málaga City Council has initiated the allocation of 202 protected homes for rent in the University sector, a promotion that is part of the municipal plan to expand the supply of protected housing in the city. Rents range from €446.28 to €511.55, plus community fees, and all homes include a garage and storage room.

Requirements and deadlines for applying for protected homes in Málaga

The application period will open on July 13 at 00:00 hours and will remain active until July 31 at 23:59 hours. Applications will be processed exclusively through the website of the Municipal Housing Institute (IMV) of Málaga. The complete guidelines for the call can be consulted in the Official Bulletin of the Province and on the pages of the IMV and Lagoom Living, the collaborating developer.

Of the 202 homes, 186 are two-bedroom (eight of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility) and 16 are one-bedroom, one of which is reserved for people in a situation of dependency. All flats come with a parking space and a storage room, which increases the rental value without significantly raising the final price.

To access these homes, applicants must meet the general requirements for protected housing in Andalusia: be registered in the Register of Applicants for Protected Housing, not exceed the established maximum income, and not own another home. The City Council reminds that the rent includes the rental fee but does not cover utilities or community fees.

Public-private collaboration and European funds

This promotion is the result of a public competition launched by the City Council for the tendering of the surface rights of four plots in the University sector for a period of 75 years at zero fee. The successful bidder, Lagoom Living, is responsible for the construction of 530 protected rental homes, of which these 202 are the second phase.

The project has a grant of €25.6 million from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through the Next Generation funds. The City Council has provided the land, valued at €13.5 million, while Lagoom Living has invested €59.3 million with financing from the Official Credit Institute (ICO).

In total, the University sector will house 1,006 protected rental homes, of which the City Council is already promoting 476 in four developments, three under construction and one already completed. The demand for affordable housing in Málaga is high, and this initiative aims to alleviate the pressure on free market prices.

How does it affect Málaga residents?

For Málaga residents seeking affordable rent, this call represents a real opportunity to access housing at a price well below the free market. The University sector, near the Teatinos campus and well connected, is one of the most sought-after areas. The application period is short, just three weeks, so it is advisable to prepare the documentation in advance.

Interested parties should keep in mind that, in addition to the monthly rent, they will have to cover community fees and utilities, although the inclusion of a garage and storage room represents significant savings. The City Council expects the homes to be available throughout 2027, once the allocation and delivery processes are completed.

For more information, citizens can consult the guidelines on the IMV website or visit the municipal offices. The date is July 13 at 00:00 hours, when the online application period opens. Don't wait until the last day: the system could crash and demand will be high.
