The Costa del Sol University Hospital (HUCS), along with the University of Málaga (UMA) and the BIONAND Platform of IBIMA, leads the European WISH (Women’s Integrated Support for Hormonal Health) project in Spain. This initiative, which focuses on the personalised follow-up of women with early breast cancer undergoing hormonal treatment, aims to improve quality of life and facilitate communication with healthcare professionals.

Objective of the WISH project

The main objective of WISH is the early identification of symptoms and adverse effects related to treatment. Additionally, it aims to promote continuity of care, monitor patients' quality of life, and provide an accessible source of information.

The initiative includes resources on healthy lifestyle habits such as diet, physical activity, and sleep management. In this way, it seeks to help patients maintain close and effective follow-up, reducing the distance between them and healthcare professionals.

Consortium meeting in Marbella

Recently, Marbella hosted the general meeting of the WISH consortium, held on October 5 and 6, where the project's progress was evaluated and the next steps were defined. Representatives from various European institutions participated in this meeting, sharing experiences and strategies to enhance the project.

Marilina García-Aranda, co-investigator and head of the B-14 Translational Research Group, commented: “We want the patient to continue feeling supported. WISH does not replace hospital care, but facilitates follow-up where the patient is.”

Although women with this type of cancer generally have a good prognosis, the duration of hormonal treatment can bring side effects that impact their quality of life. “A tool like WISH can help us identify problems that interfere with treatment adherence,” said Cristina Quero, head of Medical Oncology at HUCS.

The project has a duration of three years. The first phase focuses on the design and co-creation of the platform, followed by the intervention and evaluation of the new follow-up model, and culminates with the analysis of results and improvements to the tool.
