Málaga has been the venue for the 061 Cardiomaratón, an event where 1,400 young people have been trained in cardiac resuscitation techniques. This event took place at the University Sports Complex of the Teatinos Campus, coordinated by the Emergency Health Centre (CES) 061, part of the Andalusian Health Service.
Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation
The activity is organised annually to mark European Restart a Heart Day, celebrated on October 16. On this occasion, young people aged 12 to 16 from compulsory secondary education centres in Málaga participated in training sessions during the morning, forming small groups.
The #cardiomaratones061 are events held throughout Andalusia, and it is estimated that over 12,000 young people will receive training in cardiac resuscitation throughout the year. This event aims to teach attendees about the 'Chain of Survival', a set of vital actions that increase the chances of survival after a cardiac arrest.
Recognition for emergency actions
The Cardiomaratón also served to present twelve awards to national and local police officers who acted as first responders in emergency situations related to cardiac arrests. The authorities present, including the Health and Consumer delegate, Lucía Yeves, and the Education delegate, Miguel Briones, recognised the crucial role of these individuals in saving lives.
This year, forty volunteer teachers from various collaborating institutions joined the event, assisting in training the young people in resuscitation techniques. The continuous participation of institutions such as the Regional Hospital and the Heart Patients Association of the University Hospital of Málaga has been fundamental to the success of the Cardiomaratón.
In Andalusia, it is estimated that the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is 19.5 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Therefore, training in resuscitation techniques is considered an essential measure to reduce mortality in these cases. The use of defibrillators (AEDs) and the prompt action of witnesses are key elements to improve the survival chances of those affected.
