The town of Málaga has hosted the Global Photonics Economic Forum 2026, an event featuring the participation of over 342 companies from the photonics and microelectronics sectors across 27 countries. During the inauguration, the Councillor for University, Industry, Energy and Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía, Jorge Paradela, highlighted the Andalusian Government's intention to position Andalucía as a key region in Europe's technological autonomy.
IMEC Málaga and its impact on the industry
Paradela emphasized the fundamental role played by the IMEC facility in Málaga, an initiative that has received financial backing from the Junta de Andalucía, through an investment of 131 million euros. This project is seen as a key factor in placing Andalucía on the semiconductor map in Europe, with a significant impact on the business ecosystem and academic institutions in the region.
The councillor also mentioned the competitive advantages that Andalucía offers in the semiconductor field. These include its mining industry, which has reserves of critical raw materials for the manufacture of electronic devices, as well as a highly qualified workforce and a track record in microelectronics innovations. The University of Málaga also contributes to this ecosystem with the CHIP Chair, the best-funded in the country.
Investment and future projections
Paradela asserted that Andalucía is well-positioned to attract investments not only in the semiconductor sector but also in other technological areas. In 2025, the highest foreign direct investment capture in history was recorded, amounting to 1.364 billion euros, representing a 40% increase compared to the previous year. In the first half of 2026, investment already exceeded 900 million, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 94.6%.
After the inauguration, the councillor toured the exhibition area, where he was able to learn more about the projects of various companies, including AG Photonics, DEKRA, IMEC, Nu Quantum, and Estel, among others. This event serves as a meeting point for industry leaders aiming to establish Málaga and Andalucía as epicentres of technology and innovation on the international stage.
The Global Photonics Economic Forum, organised annually by Optica, has established itself as a key platform for research and dissemination in the field of optics and photonics. Since its first edition in 2024, it has brought together participants from prominent companies and research centres, highlighting Málaga's relevance in this sector.
