The Málaga diocese celebrates this Tuesday, September 8, Santa María de la Victoria, its patroness, with a programme starting at 11:00 with a parade and culminating in the triumphant procession that will take the image from the Cathedral to her sanctuary.
Málaga celebrates this Tuesday, a public holiday, the solemnity of the Nativity of the Virgin and the feast of its patroness, Santa María de la Victoria. The day, according to Diario Sur, will combine religious and recreational events from morning until almost midnight, with the triumphant procession of the image as the highlight.
The events will begin at 11:00 with a parade led by the Miraflores and Gibraljaire music band, which is participating in this event for the first time and is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. The band will depart from the Town Hall and will travel along the Paseo del Parque and various streets in the centre, such as Císter, Santa María, or Marqués de Larios, concluding at 11:30 next to the statue of the marquis.
At the same time, the seasonal mass will begin in the Cathedral, presided over by the Bishop of Málaga, José Antonio Satué. This will be the first time the current prelate officiates this Eucharist in the cathedral, as he will have been at the head of the diocese for a year on September 13. During the ceremony, the Cathedral organ will be played by Antonio del Pino, and the Santa María de la Victoria choir will participate.
At 11:45, a procession of offerers with ladies in mantillas will travel through Larios, Plaza de la Constitución, Granada, and Molina Lario. Around 12:30, after the mass, the central events promoted by the Asociación Pro Tradiciones Malagueñas La Coracha will begin: the floral offering in the Cathedral atrium and performances by choirs and dance groups in Plaza del Obispo starting at 13:15.
The triumphant procession will depart at 19:30 from the Cathedral towards the sanctuary of Victoria. The procession will include passion and glory brotherhoods, associations, clergy, cathedral chapter, the governing board of the Victorian corporation, and civil and military authorities. The procession will be opened by the Firefighters band, and in the middle of the procession, the Municipal Band of Málaga will be placed, while behind the throne will march the Maestro Eloy García music band of the Archconfraternity of the Expiration.
The route will pass through Santa María, Molina Lario, Marqués de Larios, Plaza de la Constitución, Granada, Calderería, Plaza Uncibay, and Madre de Dios, among other streets, to reach the sanctuary around 23:30. The image will be displayed on its throne, which last year recovered an 18th-century wooden temple for external worship, following restoration work carried out by the Aetos Restaura workshop, led by Enrique Salvo. A new box designed by Juan Antonio Sánchez López, a professor of Art History at the University of Málaga, was added to the ensemble, with gilding by the Málaga artist Alberto Berdugo.
