The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development of Andalusia, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, has presented his support for the primary sector in Parliament, which currently feels threatened by decisions from the European Union related to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Fernández-Pacheco highlighted the importance of rewarding professionals in agriculture, livestock, and fishing who have worked for years to adapt to the requirements imposed by Brussels. He emphasized that environmental sustainability must go hand in hand with social sustainability and profitability.
Defending the primary sector against European challenges
In response to questions in the Parliament's plenary session, the minister assured that the Andalusian government will continue to defend the interests of fishermen and agricultural workers. He reiterated the need for the CAP to be robust, independent, and adequately protect the most vulnerable sectors.
Fernández-Pacheco stated that they will support income aid, promote generational renewal, and encourage organic production. He also highlighted that the upcoming CAP must consider the specific characteristics of Andalusian territories, allowing each region to have an active voice in the allocation of funds.
Impact of the socioeconomic context
Fernández-Pacheco also emphasized that, in addition to uncertainty from European policies, professionals in the primary sector are facing a significant increase in fuel and other input costs, which is raising production costs beyond the benefits obtained.
The minister concluded by reiterating the commitment of the Andalusian government to work alongside all competent administrations to tackle the challenges facing the primary sector, whose effort and commitment deserve recognition and support.
