The mayor of Málaga, Paco de la Torre, defends in the state of the city debate that the City Council has delivered 5,339 protected homes since 2000 and announces that before the year ends, Málaga will have the third public housing park in Spain.
The mayor of Málaga, Paco de la Torre, opened the state of the city debate this Tuesday with a defence of municipal management in housing matters. According to Diario Sur, the mayor stated that the City Council has built and delivered a total of 5,339 protected homes since the year 2000, of which 2,511 are for sale and 2,628 are for rent.
De la Torre announced that before the end of the year, Málaga will have the third public housing park in Spain, with more than 5,000 units, behind Madrid (9,000) and Barcelona (8,000). Currently, the City Council is constructing 1,186 homes and has another 3,997 in the pre-bidding phase or in processes prior to construction.
“Málaga is today a much better city than before. When has Málaga been like it is now?”
The mayor focused on the investment effort of the City Council and compared the situation with that of the central Government. “Meanwhile, the central Government has set up a phone line and opened a website with 800 homes for all of Spain, zero in Andalucía, zero in Málaga,” he said. In this term, 1,670 Málaga families have been awarded protected homes: 1,214 for rent and 456 for sale. Next Friday, October 30, the City Council will deliver 69 homes from the 1,000 it is promoting in the University sector.
The mayor also referred to families at risk of social exclusion: in 2023 and 2024, 214 homes were allocated to these households, of which 44 were for elderly people. In his speech, the mayor listed some names of the beneficiaries, such as Victoria, José Vicente, María, Carmen, Clara, Juan Carlos, Rosario, or Ana.
De la Torre detailed that the Municipal Housing Plan 2023-2027 envisaged 4,800 free homes, but 6,719 have already been initiated. In the case of protected homes, where 4,100 were planned, there are currently 7,400 scheduled. “Housing is the topic to which we are dedicating the most time this term. Many hours of meetings, letters, calls...” he stated.
The mayor took the opportunity to demand from the central Government a solution to the lack of electrical power in the city, a problem that, in his opinion, “is exacerbating the housing crisis, in addition to hindering the attraction of investors and the development of industrial and technological projects.” In this regard, he warned that there are 13,500 homes waiting in the city.
The Urban Planning Management is processing the new General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU), with which the governing team intends to ensure sufficient land for affordable housing, cultural uses, technological innovation, open spaces, green areas, and public facilities.
