The town of Málaga is preparing for a significant increase in citrus production in the 2026-2027 season. According to a study by the Junta de Andalucía, production is expected to reach 103,452 tonnes, representing a 26.3% increase compared to the previous season.
In total, citrus production in Andalusia is estimated at 2.11 million tonnes, covering a cultivated area of 89,274 hectares. This figure represents a growth of 12.7% compared to the 2025-2026 season and an increase of 5.4% compared to the average of the last four seasons.
Production details
The Secretary General of Agriculture, Livestock and Agricultural Funds, Manuel Gómez, presented this data to representatives of the citrus sector in Seville. Gómez highlighted that the production forecast is based on data provided by the sector and collected by the territorial delegations. However, he warned that final production may be affected by climatic factors and the presence of pests.
Oranges will continue to be the predominant variety, accounting for 67% of total production, with an estimated 1.4 million tonnes. Mandarins represent 26% with nearly 557,000 tonnes, while lemons will reach 87,000 tonnes, corresponding to 4% of the total citrus production in the region.
The campaign is expected to generate around 4.4 million workdays across Andalusia, of which 2.5 million are related to citrus harvesting in the fields.
Production in other provinces
Regarding provincial data, the forecast anticipates that Almería will produce 192,778 tonnes, an increase of 2.2%, while Cádiz is expected to produce 42,881 tonnes, nearly a 25% increase. Córdoba expects to harvest 342,677 tonnes, representing a 32.8% increase. In Granada, production will reach 13,132 tonnes, more than double that of the previous year.
Huelva expects to collect 541,426 tonnes of citrus, with a 4.2% increase, and Seville estimates 877,803 tonnes, equivalent to an 11.4% growth this season.
Nationally, Andalusia positions itself as a key region in citrus production in Spain, representing almost 37% of the total expected. Additionally, it is estimated to produce 50.5% of the oranges, 30.7% of the mandarins, and 35.2% of the grapefruits in the country.
