The Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall begins tomorrow the campaign to prevent the pine processionary, expanding treatment to 700 more specimens in public spaces.
The Parks and Gardens Department of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall will launch tomorrow, Wednesday, August 26, the annual campaign for the prevention and control of the pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa). The action coincides with the start of the hatching of the eggs deposited on the pine needles and will be carried out in phases, starting with the areas considered a priority, including the educational centres in the municipality.
The Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Manuel García, explained that this year 700 additional pines located in public spaces will be included, which represents a significant increase in the number of specimens treated. Among the new action points are Parque Victoria and the vicinity of the Benagalbón football field.
“In recent years, we have progressively expanded the areas of action to cover as many specimens as possible and reach most of the pines located in public spaces in the municipality,” the councillor stated.
The mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, emphasised the importance of taking preventive action to curb the spread of the plague and avoid incidents affecting the public. The processionary caterpillar can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes, and respiratory irritations, which is why the actions focus on roundabouts, public parks, school environments, and children's areas.
The treatment will be carried out using endotherapy, a technique that applies the phytosanitary product directly into the tree's vascular system. This method, authorised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, allows for localised action without dispersing the product into the environment, making it suitable for parks, gardens, educational centres, sports fields, streets, and residential areas.
The company responsible for the work is UTE Conservación Jardines Rincón, which will follow specific protocols depending on the species and type of pest. The campaign will take place over the coming weeks, with special attention to areas frequently used by the municipality's residents.
