Algarrobo has been chosen as the venue for the V Provincial Meeting of Local Councils for Childhood and Adolescence, an event that brings together around fifty young people from various municipalities in Málaga. The inauguration took place on 2nd September and will last for two days with the aim of reflecting on the impact of social media and new technologies on childhood and adolescence.
Reflection on Social Media
The territorial delegate for Social Services, Families and Equality of the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga, Laura Valle, was present at the opening of the meeting, accompanied by the mayor of Algarrobo, Sergio Cotilla, and other local authorities. Young representatives from the Local Councils for Childhood and Adolescence of Algarrobo, Fuengirola, Alhaurín el Grande, Cártama and Benalmádena are participating in a series of activities that include workshops and group dynamics.
This year's theme is ‘Your best story is not on Instagram’, a topic selected by the young people themselves during a preparatory meeting held in July. Valle highlighted the importance of listening to adolescents' opinions about their relationship with the digital world and the experiences they have outside of screens.
Importance of Youth Participation
During the event, which is expected to gather around 70 people, relevant topics such as mental health, violence, and other fundamental rights concerning youth will be addressed. The delegate emphasized that the conclusions drawn will be communicated to those who develop Youth policies in Andalucía, to better understand the concerns and needs of this group.
The mayor of Algarrobo, Sergio Cotilla, underscored the importance of focusing attention on childhood, highlighting that today's children are the future of the municipality and their voice is essential for building a better society. Valle also stressed the need for representative bodies that allow adolescents to actively participate in decision-making that affects them.
This meeting is part of a continuous effort by the Junta de Andalucía and municipalities to promote youth participation in public life and ensure that their opinions and proposals are integrated into the policies that affect them, thus contributing to the creation of a fairer and more democratic society.
