The mayor of Villanueva de la Concepción has issued a decree calling for responsible water use in light of increased demand due to the heat. The company Aguas de los Verdiales has warned of difficulties in maintaining levels in some reservoirs.
The Villanueva de la Concepción Town Hall has made an appeal to the population to reduce water consumption given the drought situation and the increased demand caused by the high temperatures in recent weeks. The mayor has signed a decree urging residents, businesses, and establishments to use the resource responsibly.
The municipal decision comes after the supplying company, Aguas de los Verdiales, communicated the difficulties it is facing in maintaining optimal levels in some reservoirs. According to the company, the sharp increase in consumption is complicating the guarantee of sufficient flow, especially in the more remote areas and in the scattered homes that depend on the main reservoir in Puntal.
The situation is particularly critical in the southern part of the municipal area of Almogía, where some residents barely have weekly supply. Aguas de los Verdiales has indicated that, despite efforts, demand continues to exceed storage capacity in certain areas.
Additionally, the company has reported that inappropriate uses of the network water are still being detected, such as watering gardens, olive groves, and lawns, as well as filling swimming pools. These practices, according to the company, exacerbate the lack of availability and harm the supply to other areas with greater needs.
To address the situation, Aguas de los Verdiales has decided to temporarily suspend the contracting of new supplies in rural land throughout its service area. This measure is applied even if legal requirements are met and there is occasional water availability, as the company argues that the priority is to ensure supply for existing users.
The municipal decree includes a series of recommendations to reduce consumption. Among them, it asks to shorten shower times, avoid leaving taps running, and use washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads. It also requests not to water gardens, orchards, or green areas with network water, avoid cleaning streets, facades, or vehicles with hoses, and limit filling swimming pools, except in cases permitted by regulations.
The Town Hall also calls for citizen cooperation to report any leaks or breakdowns detected in the public network. It reminds that supply for human consumption is a priority and does not rule out adopting new restrictions if the evolution of reserves or the indications from the water administration make it necessary.
Drought is a recurring problem in the province of Málaga, where several municipalities have had to implement savings measures in recent years. In the case of Villanueva de la Concepción, the situation has been exacerbated by the intense heat of recent weeks, which has driven up domestic and agricultural consumption.
Residents of the most affected areas, such as the south of Almogía, hope that the measures adopted by the Town Hall and the supplying company will help alleviate the pressure on the reservoirs. In the meantime, the Town Hall insists that individual responsibility is key to overcoming this situation.
