The town of Antequera has been the focus of a new investment by the Junta of Andalucía, which is allocating over 150,000 euros to the resurfacing of the access road to the Torcal Alto Visitor Centre.
Visit from the territorial delegate
The territorial delegate for Sustainability and the Environment, Gemma del Corral, visited the emergency works accompanied by the mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón. This action is part of a provincial package that totals more than 4.5 million euros, aimed at repairing the damage caused by storms earlier this year to public facilities in natural spaces.
The works include the repair of the road surface using hot mix asphalt and bituminous emulsion, which aims to improve safety conditions for all users of the road, including vehicles and cyclists.
According to Del Corral, this work responds to a long-standing demand and aims to preserve such an important site as the Torcal de Antequera, which receives an average annual influx of approximately 270,000 visitors.
Opinions on the intervention
The mayor, Manolo Barón, highlighted the speed with which the Junta has acted in response to the damage to the access road, noting an “absolutely incredible effectiveness” in addressing the motion from the Popular Group of the Antequera City Council that requested intervention in the Torcal Natural Park.
Barón added that the improvement of access to the Natural Park not only provides safety but also dignifies the entrance to the Torcal, benefiting the community of Antequera.
These emergency works are part of a broader plan to repair the damage caused by storms in various protected natural areas of Andalucía. In total, 4,547,950 euros have been mobilised for actions in the province of Málaga, which include not only the improvement of roads like that of the Torcal but also work on livestock and forest roads.
Del Corral highlighted that more than 90 actions are underway in different areas of the province, covering cleaning, debris removal, road surface reconstruction, and drainage repairs among other necessary work for the safety and accessibility of natural spaces.
