The Active Participation Centre on Calzada de Antequera is back in operation after completing its comprehensive renovation, funded by European funds. The schedule of workshops will resume in October.
The Active Participation Centre (CPA) on Calzada de Antequera is now operational and has resumed its activities for the elderly in the city, after the final acceptance of the works was formalised last Friday. The reopening was announced on Monday during a press conference by the mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón; the territorial delegate for Social Services, Families and Equality of the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga, Laura Valle; and the centre's director, Antonio Matas.
The comprehensive renovation, funded by Next Generation European funds, benefits the 4,992 users registered at the CPA. During the construction period, most workshops and activities were maintained in alternative spaces thanks to the collaboration of the City Council, the municipal departments of Social Welfare and Seniors, and various entities in the city.
Mayor Manolo Barón described the project as a “magnificent reform” and thanked the new territorial delegate for her involvement in unblocking a situation that had lasted longer than expected. Barón recalled that, although the works were not under municipal jurisdiction, the City Council has actively engaged as a representative of the elderly in Antequera.
“The centre is open again with absolute normality,” confirmed Laura Valle, who highlighted the “completely renovated” facilities.
The regular schedule of workshops will resume during the first days of October. Among the offerings are gymnastics, choir, memory, oil painting, fabric painting, computer skills, and mobile phone usage. Currently, 222 elderly people regularly participate, of which approximately 85% are women.
The renovation included the creation of a new spacious and multipurpose auditorium on the first floor, the renewal of the cognitive stimulation workshop and the crafts classroom, and the modernisation of the computer classroom with improved connectivity. The restrooms on both floors have also been adapted, and the lighting has been improved, with more natural light.
The centre offers complementary services such as a café, dining room, hairdresser, and legal advice. The café and hairdresser are finalising their setup after the renovations.
Cultural activities have not stopped: the CPA theatre group will perform next Saturday, September 12 at the Antequera Dolmens Archaeological Complex.
