The municipality of Antequera will host activities centred around its star crop, the purple carrot, and its Jacobean heritage on July 25 and 26.
The Málaga town of Cuevas Bajas is finalising preparations for the fourth edition of the Water and Sowing Festival, an event that combines agricultural tradition, adventure sports, and the promotion of the Mozarabic Way to Santiago. The event, which will take place on the last weekend of July, aims to establish itself as a benchmark for inland tourism in the Antequera region.
The programme will kick off on Saturday 25 in the morning with a sowing workshop in local gardens, followed by a breakfast that will allow attendees to taste products made with the purple carrot, a native variety that gives the municipality its identity. During the central hours, the Genil River will be the setting for rafting and kayaking activities, designed to refresh participants.
In the evening, the municipal pool will host the traditional 'Ponte Morao' festival, which will include workshops, raffles, a children's proclamation, culinary demonstrations, and an interactive virtual reality game featuring the purple carrot. This playful proposal aims to attract a diverse audience, from families to young people.
Sunday 26 will be dedicated to hiking with a route along the Mozarabic Way to Santiago as it passes through the municipality. During the journey, the first mosaic of the future outdoor interpretation centre dedicated to the history of the Civil Guard and banditry will be inaugurated, an initiative aimed at preserving the historical memory of the area.
Participants will also be able to visit the 50-metre Jacobean Arrow installed in the municipality, classified as the largest in Spain, an element that reinforces Cuevas Bajas' connection to the Jacobean route. The festive weekend will conclude with workshops on traditional games, an introduction to the use of the botijo, and a tasting of paella morá, a dish that incorporates the local carrot as the star ingredient.
The Málaga Provincial Council has supported this event, considering it a key driver for inland tourism and the promotion of local customs. The mayor of Cuevas Bajas, Manuel Lara, has highlighted that the festival aims to intertwine agriculture, history, and culture of the territory under the three main emblems of the municipality: its unique carrot variety, the Mozarabic Way, and its traditional legacy.
