The Exhibition Hall of the Antequera Town Hall hosts until August 20 a selection of bullfighting posters from the Historical Municipal Archive, showcasing the evolution of printing and graphic design between the 19th and 20th centuries.
The exhibition 'Printing and Bullfighting', inaugurated this Tuesday, August 11, brings together in Antequera a selection of historic bullfighting posters from the Historical Municipal Archive. The exhibition, which can be visited until August 20, is part of the events leading up to the Royal August Fair and allows visitors to explore the evolution of posters from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century.
The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, and the councillor for Culture and Historical Heritage, José Medina Galeote, presented the exhibition alongside the deputy mayor in charge of Major Festivals and Traditions, Elena Melero. During the presentation, Barón highlighted the value of the poster as a form of artistic expression and means of communication, recalling that for decades it was one of the main ways to announce festivities and convey information about them.
The exhibition features examples that showcase the technical and artistic transformation of posters, with a special focus on lithography and, later, other photomechanical processes. As Medina Galeote explained, these posters reflect the different aesthetic tastes and artistic movements that emerged over the decades, making them a window into the history of art and graphic design.
Beyond their advertising function, the posters are historical documents that provide information about festivities, bullfighters, livestock, prices, locations, and celebration rules. They thus become a source of particular interest for understanding the evolution of bullfighting, graphic arts, and society in each era, as municipal officials have pointed out.
The mayor has invited both locals and visitors, whether or not they are bullfighting enthusiasts, to explore an exhibition he has described as a
“one hundred percent artistic”display. For his part, Medina Galeote expressed gratitude for the conservation work carried out by the Historical Municipal Archive, which now allows these collections to be publicly displayed in line with the dates leading up to the Royal August Fair.
The exhibition 'Printing and Bullfighting' can be visited in the Exhibition Hall of the Antequera Town Hall until Thursday, August 20, from 11:00 to 14:00, remaining closed during weekends and public holidays. Admission is free, allowing locals and visitors to engage with this graphic heritage in the vibrant pre-fair atmosphere.
