Aguas del Torcal has initiated a preventive campaign to clean drains and manholes in Antequera to avoid blockages ahead of the end of summer and autumn rains.

The municipal company Aguas del Torcal began this week a special campaign to clean drains, manholes, and other elements of the rainwater collection network in Antequera. The work will continue over the coming weeks and will progressively reach the neighbourhoods, the outlying areas, and the city centre.

The aim is to remove debris and check the condition of the drainage points so that the network maintains its capacity in the event of possible rainfall episodes. The action starts once the extraordinary work for the Real Feria de Agosto and the subsequent tasks after the festivities are completed.

The deputy mayor responsible for Aguas del Torcal, José Manuel Fernández, explains that "numerous" workers are already dedicated to these tasks and that the campaign will continue until the review of the stormwater system is complete. This is a preventive action that is repeated every year during a time when rains of varying intensity can occur.

"We want that when those moderate or torrential rains arrive in the city, everything is in perfect condition and has sufficient capacity to handle them without causing any damage," Fernández points out.

The accumulation of leaves, dirt, and other debris can reduce the capacity of drains and manholes, so the prior cleaning aims to decrease the risk of blockages and facilitate water evacuation. The municipal company will act in different areas of the Antequera municipality, checking both visible elements and those points where sediment needs to be removed.

The intention is to complete these tasks before autumn progresses and the likelihood of rainfall episodes increases.
