The Spanish Government has allocated over 125 million euros to Marbella in recent years, mainly with European funds. The investments include the expansion of the hospital, acoustic screens on the A-7, and sports facilities.
The Spanish Government has injected over 125 million euros into Marbella since the pandemic, a figure that has allowed for the financing of key projects for the municipality. Most of these funds, coming from the European Union, have been managed by administrations governed by the PP, who at the time opposed their arrival.
The hospital, the largest allocation
The largest investment is allocated to the Hospital Universitario Costa del Sol, with 86 million euros approved in August 2023 for its expansion and modernisation. The money comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the REACT-EU programme, created to support economic recovery after COVID-19.
These funds, secured by President Pedro Sánchez in Brussels, were criticised by the PP during Pablo Casado's tenure, who attempted to block them. However, it is now the PP who manages them from the Junta de Andalucía and the Marbella City Council, boasting about the works.
Acoustic screens and mobility
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is carrying out the installation of acoustic screens on the A-7 motorway, with a budget of 13.1 million euros. This action is part of the Noise Action Plan and is funded by Next Generation funds from the Recovery Plan.
For residents of the surrounding areas, this measure will mean a significant reduction in traffic noise, improving their quality of life. The works are already underway and are expected to conclude in the coming months.
Sports and social facilities
The central government’s money has also saved two municipal projects that were at risk due to lack of liquidity. The athletics stadium in La Campana will receive 9.5 million euros, 85% of its total budget, through the Ministry of Finance and the Community Action Network for the Integration and Wellbeing of Las Albarizas and La Campana.
On the other hand, the senior residence at Trapiche del Prado will receive nearly 2.8 million euros from the Ministry of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, also funded by the Recovery Plan. These works will allow for the completion of a facility highly demanded by the elderly population of Marbella.
Additionally, with Next Generation funds, energy efficiency works are being carried out in several municipal buildings: the town hall in Plaza de Los Naranjos (1.9 million), the Congress Palace (2.3 million), and the tourist office at Fontanilla (284,000 euros).
Environment and culture
The Ministry of Ecological Transition has allocated 1.8 million euros for the renaturalisation and flood risk mitigation of the Guadaiza River. A project aimed at preventing water surges and improving the natural environment of the riverbed.
In the cultural sphere, the rehabilitation of the Castle of Marbella receives 315,000 euros from the 1.5% cultural fund, covering 61% of the total cost. The Rhythmic Gymnastics Technification Centre in La Represa also has 1.3 million from the Ministry of Culture and Sport.
Finally, the 18 young rental homes on Huerta de los Cristales street received 25% co-financing from the Government, around 300,000 euros, and the Cilniana Institute, alongside the hospital, was paid 80% with ERDF funds.
In total, the investment from the Spanish Government in Marbella exceeds 125 million euros, an amount that has allowed for the promotion of projects in health, infrastructure, sports, culture, and the environment, directly benefiting the people of Marbella.
