A 74-year-old local man died early this morning after being struck by a car on the A-7, near Marbella. The victim had suffered a breakdown in his vehicle and was attempting to cross the road.
A 74-year-old man lost his life in the early hours of this Wednesday after being hit on the A-7 motorway as it passes through Marbella. The incident occurred at kilometre 1,047, in the municipality of San Pedro de Alcántara, when the victim was trying to cross from one lane to another after his articulated vehicle broke down.
The accident happened around 0:45 hours, according to the Andalucía Emergency Service 112, which received several alert calls. Initially, the reports suggested a possible collision between two vehicles, but minutes later witnesses confirmed it was a fatal accident.
The driver of the car involved, an Audi Q5, could not avoid the impact. According to sources from the investigation, the motorist did not expect to find a person on the road and did not see him in time. The man died instantly due to the force of the collision.
Traffic Civil Guard officers, medical services, and road maintenance personnel were dispatched to the scene. The medical staff could only confirm the victim's death, who lay on the asphalt without vital signs. The Audi driver was unharmed.
This is the second fatal accident on the A-7 this summer. Last July, a 17-year-old Norwegian girl, identified as Nikoline, died after being hit in a hit-and-run incident. The alleged perpetrator was later located by the Civil Guard.
The authorities have reminded the importance of exercising extreme caution on fast roads, especially at night. In case of a breakdown, they recommend turning on hazard lights, wearing a reflective vest, and positioning oneself off the road, behind the safety barrier, while waiting for assistance.
The Traffic Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the incident. Visibility conditions, the speed of the car, and whether the victim was wearing reflective items will be examined. It is not ruled out that the accident may be due to a fatal combination of poor visibility and the difficulty of reacting to an unexpected pedestrian on the motorway.
The section of the A-7 where the accident occurred, near San Pedro de Alcántara, is an area with high traffic density, especially in summer. Drivers using this road must be alert to possible obstacles, although authorities insist that pedestrians should never cross a motorway, even in emergencies.
The DGT reminds that, in the event of a breakdown on a motorway or dual carriageway, the safest option is to exit the vehicle through the passenger door and take refuge behind the safety barrier, calling 112 for assistance. Crossing the road to reach the other direction is an extremely dangerous maneuver that can cost lives, as has happened in this case.
The victim's body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Málaga for an autopsy. The investigation remains open to determine if the car driver could face any criminal responsibility, although all indications point to an accidental incident.
