The musical group, formed by students and alumni, performed traditional melodies through the streets of the Historic Centre of Oaxaca de Juárez, as part of the Guelaguetza festivities.
The University Tuna of the “Benito Juárez” Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO) celebrated this weekend its traditional “Callejonada Guelaguetza 2026”, a musical tour through the main streets of the Historic Centre of Oaxaca de Juárez that brought together students, faculty, alumni, and visitors.
The activity, framed within the Guelaguetza festivities – one of the most emblematic cultural expressions of the state – aims to preserve and disseminate Oaxacan cultural heritage while strengthening university identity. The members of the tuna, dressed in traditional attire, performed songs from their repertoire, filling the historic centre's streets with music and joy.
Representing the rector of UABJO, Farid Acevedo López, was Master Rolando del Puerto Núñez, who highlighted the importance of these spaces to promote artistic expressions and bring the university community closer to society. “It is essential to keep our traditions alive and for the university to be a cultural engine,” he stated during the event.
The callejonada also featured the presence of the director of the Cultural Agenda of UABJO, Mariana Ramos Sosa, and the director of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Julio César Bravo Cruz, who accompanied the tour and supported the initiative.
The University Tuna of UABJO is a long-established group that has represented the institution in various local, national, and international forums. Its participation in the Guelaguetza reinforces the university's commitment to cultural dissemination and the preservation of Oaxacan traditions.
The tour, which lasted several hours, concluded with a musical showcase in the Plaza de la Danza, where attendees could enjoy a varied repertoire that included traditional sones and popular pieces. The activity was free and open to the public, allowing both locals and tourists to join in the celebration.
