RM Sotheby's will auction the Cizeta-Moroder V16T prototype, a unique supercar, at the end of August with an estimated price between €1.2 and €1.5 million.
A supercar with Italian origin and the surname of a disco music legend will go up for auction on 28 August under the hammer of RM Sotheby's. This is the Cizeta-Moroder V16T, a functional prototype with an estimated value between $1.4 and $1.8 million, which at the current exchange rate equates to €1.2 and €1.5 million.
The unit being offered is chassis 001, the first and only one to bear the name of composer Giorgio Moroder. It was designed by engineer Claudio Zampolli, a former test driver for Lamborghini, who in the late 1980s partnered with the musician to create his own supercar and attract public attention with an unconventional engine.
Under the bodywork designed by Marcelo Gandini, also the author of the Lamborghini Miura, Countach, and Lancia Stratos, lies a 6.0-litre V16 engine mounted transversely, accompanied by a five-speed manual gearbox. This configuration, inspired by the Miura itself, makes this piece exceptional even before lifting the hood.
The car debuted in Los Angeles in December 1988 with a white body and red leather interior, to the rhythm of 'A Car is Born', a composition created by Moroder for the occasion. That event marked the beginning of a production that ultimately reached only nine units in addition to the prototype, due to the complex manufacturing challenges.
The partnership between Zampolli and Moroder broke down after the first unit due to accumulated delays, which explains why the rest of the cars did not bear the musician's surname. Moroder himself kept this example for years and carried out a comprehensive tuning to make it roadworthy, with improvements such as additional thermal protection around the fuel tanks and various mechanical adjustments.
In 2022, the vehicle changed hands and was acquired by its current owner, who has undertaken restorations to restore its original appearance. Now, this unique piece designed by Gandini is going up for auction, and it is expected to reach a seven-figure sum.
For collectors, the interest lies not only in its rarity but also in the differences compared to the production model: larger side air intakes with more slats, a diagonal crease at the bottom of the body connecting to the rear bumper, and other details that make chassis 001 a one-of-a-kind piece.
The bidding will take place at the end of August, organised by RM Sotheby's, which has not specified the exact location of the event. Interested parties can check the participation conditions on the auction house's website.
