Málaga, 25 September 2026. The ‘Thinking Together’ cycle at the Andalusian Centre for Letters, part of the Ministry of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport, will bring political scientist Alicia Valdés to the city.
The author will present her essay ‘Auge’ on Tuesday, September 29 at 19:30, in a dialogue with sociologist Marina López. The event is free to attend until capacity is reached.
Essay 'Auge' and Youth Political Polarisation
The essay ‘Auge’ explores the current political polarisation evidenced by recent surveys: young men tend towards the right while women of the same generation lean towards the left. Valdés argues that this trend is not solely due to the influence of feminism, but to a series of interrelated factors.
To understand this phenomenon, the political scientist analyses the role of the internet, how emotions become politicised, and the influence of job insecurity and economic crises on youth political identity.
Alicia Valdés' Background
Alicia Valdés, originally from Asturias, is a political scientist and holds a PhD in Humanities. She is currently the director of the think tank La·grima, and her research covers topics such as affect theory, far-right politics, and anarchist practices.
In addition to her essay ‘Auge’, she has written other academic works and books, including ‘Toward a Feminist Lacanian Left Psychoanalytic Theory and Intersectional Politics’ (Routledge, 2022) and ‘Politics of Discontent’ (Debate, 2024).
Alongside this activity, the Andalusian Centre for Letters will host a literary event for International Translation Day, where translator Alicia Martorell will discuss the evolution of the essay in contemporary translation.
