The Government's subdelegate, Javier Salas, has confirmed that the expansion of the Baños del Carmen beach will be operational next summer. The works, which include groynes and environmental measures, will conclude in spring.
The expansion work of the Baños del Carmen beach will be completed in spring 2026 and will be able to welcome bathers next summer, as confirmed this Wednesday by the Government's subdelegate in Málaga, Javier Salas, during a visit to the works. The project, which has a budget of around five million euros, aims to halt the historical erosion of this area of the capital.
Salas defended the project against the criticisms of a group of environmentalists gathered at the site: "The location will be in perfect condition for use next summer. This is a project that has been historically demanded by the citizens of Málaga," he stated. According to Diario Sur, the subdelegate wanted to convey a message of reassurance about the environmental impact, assuring that the project is "very environmentally friendly."
Among the highlighted ecological measures is the translocation of specimens of Patella ferruginea, a protected limpet at extreme risk of extinction, and the installation of a submerged barrier of 420 linear meters to prevent sediments from damaging the rocky areas. The new beach will have a triangular shape, with the widest part facing Morlaco, and will multiply its area from 2,700 to 12,700 square meters, almost five times more.
To stabilize the coastline, a large V-shaped groyne will be constructed, with 100 meters above water and 93 submerged, in addition to 47,000 tons of rockfill. The regeneration will use 75,000 cubic meters of screened sand from riverbeds, "the same natural sand that rivers and streams originally carried," according to Salas. A maritime marking system with night visibility and a new access from the Morlaco sports area will also be installed.
Regarding the future park on the grounds of the former campsite, the subdelegate reiterated that a agreement with the City Council of Málaga is being finalised to reform the land area of the Baños del Carmen, which will be concluded "shortly."
