The province of Málaga has been the setting for the celebration of International Day of Older Persons, an event organised by the Junta of Andalucía that brought together around 500 users from 14 Active Participation Centres. The activity took place on October 1st and was marked by an emotional and participatory atmosphere.
Participation and Recognition
The territorial delegate for Social Services, Families and Equality, Laura Valle, was present at the gathering, where she emphasised the importance of the role of older persons in social cohesion. “Today we want to highlight their legacy,” she stated.
The events were held in various locations in Málaga, including the Gonzalo Martín Tenllado Conservatory and the Active Participation Centres of Perchel and Trinidad. Throughout the day, various activities took place such as workshops, theatre, choirs, ballroom dancing, and flamenco fitness, providing attendees with an opportunity for recreation and socialisation.
Active and Healthy Ageing
One of the highlights of the day was the recognition of Ángeles Ruiz Pérez, a user of the Active Participation Centre in Torrox. At 90 years old, Ángeles is an example of active participation, having contributed as a volunteer teacher in craft workshops for several years.
Laura Valle also reflected on the valuable contributions of older persons in their family environments, highlighting their energy and commitment to active ageing. In total, more than 57,000 people participate annually in the programmes of the 14 Active Participation Centres in Málaga, where they have access to various services and activities designed to foster social relationships and combat loneliness.
The delegate concluded by encouraging older persons to continue participating in these centres, emphasising that they are a fundamental resource for improving health and well-being, and for preventing dependency.
