The president of the Andalusian PP, Juanma Moreno, claims that Francisco de la Torre could continue as mayor of Málaga even if he had to communicate using sign language. Regarding the succession in 2027, he says it will be decided 'when the time comes' with the mayor himself.

The president of the Andalusian PP, Juanma Moreno, has addressed the debate about the political future of Málaga's mayor, Francisco de la Torre, and his hoarseness issue. During his speech at the Diálogos SUR forum, Moreno stated that De la Torre could remain at the helm of the City Council even if he had to resort to sign language. This information is reported by Diario Sur.

"There is no doubt that a politician's voice is the indicator, the most important instrument, but Paco de la Torre could perfectly be mayor using sign language; we would all understand him"

Moreno responded to the statements made by the mayor's wife, Rosa Francia, who raised the question of whether hoarseness could be an impediment for De la Torre to lead the PP's candidacy in the municipal elections of 2027.

When asked if the future successor of the mayor should be on the popular lists for the elections on May 23, 2027, the leader of the Andalusian popular party maintained that this matter would be addressed in due time with De la Torre himself. "We will decide when the time comes logically, and at the moment that Paco himself wants to determine where that succession should go," he emphasized.

Moreno defended that in politics one must move "within short timeframes" and that right now the PP has a "magnificent" candidate in De la Torre, who "evidently is our present, with a vocation for the future." He even joked that he is already preparing the mayor's campaign for the municipal elections of 2031.

The president of the Andalusian PP praised the management of the Málaga mayor, whom he described as "a successful formula studied not only in Spain but in Europe for how to transform a city." He highlighted that Málaga does not have a strong historical heritage like other cities and that its centre was "absolutely disjointed, non-existent," and has become "a city of museums, a cultural reference."

"All of that has been done by Paco, and that cannot be lost, because that legacy can be lost," Moreno assured, for whom it is the obligation of the Andalusian PP to ensure that "there is continuity after Paco de la Torre." He wished the mayor "a long and fruitful life" and added: "I hope and wish he continues for a long time as mayor, but we will also think about the future."

The statements come less than a year before the electoral date in May 2027, when the PP has not yet officially defined whether De la Torre will run again as a candidate.
