Málaga University Hospital has begun research aimed at improving the diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion, a common medical condition in the field of Pulmonology. This project has been made possible thanks to a Research Grant awarded by the Official College of Physicians of Málaga.
Research Details
The project will be carried out by the Interventional Pulmonology Unit and the Medical Oncology Service of the hospital. The research aims to validate an ultrasound scale based on eight parameters to estimate early the likelihood that a pleural effusion is malignant.
This tool aims to facilitate diagnosis, expedite the process, and improve clinical decision-making. It is important to note that pleural effusion represents one of the most common conditions in Pulmonology and is one of the most frequent causes of hospitalization.
Importance of Scale Validation
Between 20% and 25% of pleural effusions have a malignant origin. Therefore, early identification of those that are malignant is crucial for opting for the appropriate treatment, reducing the time to diagnosis, and avoiding unnecessary invasive procedures.
Although thoracic ultrasound can help detect signs of malignancy, there has not yet been a validated scale to estimate risk in a standardized way. The proposal for this model, known as PMUS-8, seeks to fill this gap and allow for better assessment in patients with pleural effusion.
The granting of the scholarship represents a step forward in diagnostic accuracy, contributing to earlier identification of patients at risk of oncological disease and optimizing the indication for invasive tests, as well as improving the use of healthcare system resources.
Antonio Dorado, head of the Pulmonology service, highlighted that this grant is a recognition of the collaborative work of professionals in the diagnosis of patients with suspected cancer. The goal is to promote the creation of a tool that facilitates the early identification of malignant pleural effusions, optimizing the diagnostic process and fostering effective coordination between Pulmonology, Oncology, and other specialties.
The Interventional Pulmonology Unit of Málaga University Hospital is recognized by the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) as a Specialized Unit that meets excellence criteria in this area.
