The Minister of Social Services, Families and Equality of Andalusia, Loles López, has defended the importance of recognising all family realities and the need to adapt policies to their different needs in a recent parliamentary committee.

López emphasised that family is an essential space for support and learning throughout life. She stressed that it is within the family that the first steps are taken, the first words are spoken, and values such as love and affection are learned.

The minister highlighted that family bonds are enduring, accompanying individuals in their independent lives. In this context, she defined family as “a support network for life” that serves both in difficult times and in moments of joy.

Recognition of family diversity

López reaffirmed that “all types of families fit in Andalusia” and that all of them hold the same value. She stated that it is essential for public policies to address the different demographic and economic realities, always considering the particular circumstances of each family.

Among the situations she mentioned are single-parent and large families, as well as those that include people with disabilities or dependency. The minister insisted that it is essential to attend to diversity in economic and regulatory approaches.

Reconciliation and shared responsibility

Another aspect highlighted by the minister was the importance of advancing reconciliation and shared responsibility in family life. López emphasised that this is a challenge that affects society as a whole and must be an integral part of the Andalusian Government.

In her speech, she reminded that women have the right to reconcile their work and family lives, calling for social involvement to internalise shared responsibility and promote a cultural change around this issue.

Finally, she stressed that creating a family involves sharing not only moments and emotions but also responsibilities. She concluded by stating that women “do not want to be heroines, they want to be happy.”
