The civil engineer, Canals and Ports, writer, and filmmaker Juan Manuel Calvo has passed away in Málaga, as reported by Diario Sur. Born in Madrid in 1942, he developed most of his professional and personal career in the province, where he had resided in the neighbourhood of El Palo since 1969.

Calvo worked at the Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadalquivir, where he participated in the construction of the Guadalhorce-Guadalteba dam, the railway variant from Bobadilla to El Chorro, and various road layouts. He also directed projects for dams, canals, and urban sanitation, and in the 1980s he promoted pioneering systems such as the Mesure Project (1981) and the Automated Hydrological Information System (1985).

For his management during the drought from 1993 to 1995, he received the Cruz de Oficial de la Orden del Mérito Civil and a silver medal at the Geneva Inventors' Salon. In the urban planning field, he was co-director of the general plans for Manilva and La Línea de la Concepción, and collaborated on those for Málaga and Algeciras.

His artistic side was equally intense. He published more than 30 books of poetry, six novels, and an essay on Don Quixote. In 1979, he co-founded the Colectivo PALMO of painters and writers from Málaga, and made the medium-length film Los habitantes de Antequera (1973) and the short film Fiesta de verdiales (1977).

He was married to the Granada painter Pepa Caballero, who passed away in 2012, and he had two children, Daniel and Adalia.
