The current deputy spokesperson for Con Málaga in the City Council will run in the 2027 municipal elections with the aim of building a united left candidacy against the PP.
Toni Morillas will be the candidate of Izquierda Unida for the mayoralty of Málaga in the 2027 municipal elections. The current deputy spokesperson for the municipal group Con Málaga in the City Council has been chosen by the party to contest the city government against the current mayor, Paco de la Torre, who is expected to run again, according to Diario Sur.
Morillas has announced that she will work to build a united candidacy that confronts the current model of the city and places the right to housing, neighbourhoods, and the needs of the working population at the centre of municipal action. The leader has claimed the need for "a change of era" for the capital.
"It is time for doors and windows to be opened in the City Council and for fresh air to start coming in. It is time to send Paco de la Torre, the Popular Party, and their speculative politics home."
In her speech, Morillas denounced the "collapse situation" that, in her opinion, the PP has brought to Málaga. "The city is being squeezed by a handful of speculators who have replaced our homes with tourist accommodations, local shops with franchises, and have turned public spaces into a themed showcase for business," she criticised. Her plan, she revealed, is for "Málaga to be a place to live and not to speculate."
The IU candidate has framed the upcoming municipal elections as a choice between two models. "They will have to decide whether they want their city to continue being a business opportunity for large investment funds and the PP's speculative network or if they want to reclaim it to live in," she pointed out.
Alongside Morillas, nine other individuals will stand in the candidacy, including union members, activists, and cultural professionals. They are Paco Guzmán, a HOAC member and neighbourhood activist in Miraflores del Palo; Irene Muñoz, a teacher and public education unionist; Rodrigo Muñoz, an activist from the El Palo Neighbourhood Association and member of La Desbandá; Noemí Escobar, a housing rights activist; Francisco Javier Jiménez, former president of the Social Work College and activist; Silvia Moreno, a translator and member of the rowing team of the Noctiluca BCS Sports Association, formed by breast cancer survivors; Alejandro García, a lawyer and piano teacher; Lara Campos, a university student and member of the Critical Studies group; and Sixto Martín, a worker at the Picasso Museum and singer of La Trinidad.
Morillas has called for the unification of all political forces, social forces, and people mobilising in the neighbourhoods of Málaga, "with the determination of a left that has the courage to stand up to and challenge the powerful." "From today, I commit to putting all my effort into weaving the best candidacy, the most united candidacy that allows us to contest the city government," she declared.
It remains to be seen if her name will also be the consensus choice in the left coalition that aims for the Málaga mayoralty in the 2027 elections.
