Antequera, 20th July 2026. The Councillor for Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport of Andalusia, Patricia del Pozo, has inaugurated two commemorative exhibitions at the Antequera Dolmens Archaeological Site for the tenth anniversary of its declaration as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which took place on 15th July 2016.
Exhibitions that connect past and present
The exhibitions are part of an extensive programme of activities that will take place during the second half of the year. One of the displays, titled 'Megalithism in the lands of Almería. Resistances and Resiliencies', presents an innovative perspective on the societies that inhabited the southeast of the peninsula over five thousand years ago. It is curated by Margarita Sánchez, a professor of Prehistory at the University of Granada.
This exhibition brings together around 75 valuable pieces from the National Archaeological Museum, the Almería Museum, and the University of Granada. It combines audiovisual resources and soundscapes to offer an immersive experience that connects with recent research.
Contemporary art in dialogue with megalithism
The second exhibition, 'The Permanent Trace', continues the line of research that links contemporary art and megalithism. It presents seven works by artists born between 1940 and 1950, such as 'Altar B' by Soledad Sevilla and 'Lumbre' by José Manuel Broto, along with a guest piece by Marcela Cernadas.
These exhibitions aim not only to celebrate a cultural legacy but also to advance research and dissemination of heritage, reaffirming the commitment of the Councillor for Culture to the conservation of one of the most important megalithic sites in Europe.
Together, these activities offer opportunities for citizen participation and bringing culture closer to the community. The Councillor assures that this anniversary is key to continuing to explore the history and culture of megalithism, as well as to innovate in the way this heritage is presented and preserved.
Finally, a contract has also been announced for the installation of a modern storage system at the Archaeological Site, which will facilitate the conservation and management of its collections.
