The Costa Rican surfing team kicked off with a full set of qualifications at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Darshan Antequera and Rachel Agüero recorded the best waves of the day in Cabarete.
The Costa Rican surfing delegation has begun its participation in the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 with a flawless record. All its representatives advanced past the first round held at Playa Encuentro, Cabarete (Dominican Republic), and two of them scored the best waves of the day.
Costa Rican Darshan Antequera was the standout in the men's shortboard category. In his heat, he scored 13.00 points, with waves of 8.17 and 4.83, surpassing Colombian Romeo Chávez (8.90) and Panamanian Jean Carlos González (4.66). Additionally, his wave of 8.17 was the best of the day among the men.
Meanwhile, Rachel Agüero shone in the women's shortboard with a total of 11.16 points (7.33 and 3.83). The Costa Rican surfer outperformed Puerto Rican Havanna Cabrero (7.40) and Colombian Margarita Conde (4.37), qualifying directly for the second round and also achieving the best wave of the day in her category.
The other male representative in shortboard, Sam Reidy, also advanced after defeating Puerto Rican Jaime Martínez with 8.17 points against 5.24. In the women's category, Erika Berra secured her spot by finishing second in her heat with 7.20 points (4.50 and 2.70), only surpassed by Mexican Ana González (10.84).
In the men's longboard, Anthony Flores won his series with 8.60 points (4.60 and 4.00), also qualifying for the next phase. The competition will continue this Sunday with Costa Rica's debut in men's SUP Surf, where José Ruiz and Juan Bernini will compete. Additionally, Flores will return to the waves to contest the second round of longboard.
The Costa Rican team aims to maintain the level shown in this first day to continue adding medals in the waves of Cabarete, which have proven to be favourable for Latin American surfing.
