Benagalbón will celebrate the 31st edition of the Traditional Verdiales Contest in Montes style on September 19, featuring nine groups. The announcement will take place on September 11 at the Casa Fuerte Bezmiliana.
The researcher Pedro Cantalejo will be the announcer for the 31st edition of the Traditional Verdiales Contest in Montes style, which will be held on Saturday, September 19 in Benagalbón, part of Rincón de la Victoria. The mayor and president of the Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, presented the programme this Thursday alongside the councillor for Culture, Mari Paz Couto, the president of Peña El Revezo, Victoria Castillo, and the poster's creator, Pablo Alonso Herráiz.
Nine groups will compete in the contest: Primera del Puerto de la Torre, Jotrón y Lomillas, Santón Pitar from Moclinejo, Montes del Guadalmedina from Bataná, La Cepa, Primera de los Montes, and Primera de Benagalbón. Guest groups will include the Panda Primera de Comares, the Sexmo group (Almogía style), and the Cuadrilla del Estefanío from Las Torres de Cotillas (Murcia).
The announcement and the official presentation of the poster will take place on September 11 at 21:00 in the gardens of Casa Fuerte Bezmiliana. The poster, created by Alonso Herráiz, pays tribute to Pepe Molina, a key figure in the verdiales festival and Málaga folklore.
“Talking about verdiales is not just talking about music. It is talking about Málaga, our towns, our roots,” said Salado, who added that “when a tradition is alive... that tradition has a future.”
The contest will begin at 18:00 on September 19 in the streets and squares of Benagalbón. Salado invited both locals and visitors to come: “Come to understand why in Benagalbón, verdiales are not just a tradition. They are a way of feeling Málaga.”
