A dolphin has appeared dead on the beach of Rincón de la Victoria. The alert to 112 was made early on Monday morning and the causes of death are being investigated.

A dolphin has been found dead on the beach of Rincón de la Victoria early on Monday. The alert, given by a witness to 112 Emergency Services of the Junta de Andalucía, was received at eight in the morning, according to Diario Sur.

The animal was stranded on the sand, at the height of number 6 on the Virgen del Carmen promenade, near a well-known beach bar, and showed traces of blood, although there is still no official explanation regarding the circumstances of its death. The coordinating centre has activated the Local Police of Rincón de la Victoria, which has reported the incident to the Centre for the Recovery of Threatened Marine Species (Crema) and to the contractor for the protection and collection of animals in the municipality, Don Animal.

According to protocol, Crema technicians will inspect the remains of the cetacean and collect samples before the contractor takes care of the incineration. Initial observations suggest that it may be a young individual.

This same weekend, bathers were able to see two dolphins at a short distance from the shore in Valle Niza, in Vélez-Málaga, less than ten kilometres from Rincón de la Victoria. The Alboran Sea is one of the areas with the greatest wealth of cetaceans in the Mediterranean, and it is not uncommon for an individual to become stranded and need help to return to its habitat.
