The active tourism company Kayak Nerja expands its offer with two guided routes: one to the iconic Balcón de Europa and another to the wreck 'Barco del Arroz', a ship sunk in 1937. The activities, suitable for the whole family, depart from its new base in El Playazo.
Ettore Russi, a traveller who fell in love with the Eastern Costa del Sol in 2009, has turned his passion for the sea into an active tourism business. From his new location on El Playazo beach in Nerja, he runs Kayak Nerja, a company that offers kayak rentals, paddle surf boards, and pedal boats. For this summer, he has prepared two new guided routes that promise to showcase the most unique corners of the Axarquía coastline.
The first is a two-hour crossing that allows you to see the Balcón de Europa from the water. The round trip has become the most in-demand option of the season. "It is not an intensive sport activity, but an ideal stroll for family leisure," explains Russi. Therefore, it is suitable for all ages, although they recommend that participants be at least four years old. The company has received clients up to 80 years old, demonstrating its inclusive nature.
The second route, longer and with a historical component, is the guided visit to the well-known 'Barco del Arroz'. This is a wreck located off the beach of Calaceite in Torrox. The steamship Delfín was torpedoed by an Italian submarine in late January 1937 during the Civil War. It was transporting rice, flour, cod, and oil for the Republican side. "It was one of the last coastal vessels sent by the Republicans to supply food to the people of Málaga," recounts Russi. The captain managed to save the crew and bring the ship close to shore, but the cargo could not be rescued. Since then, the wreck has rested just four meters deep.
The guided route to the 'Barco del Arroz' lasts three and a half hours and is limited to groups of eight people. It includes a stop for snorkelling among the wreckage, a unique experience in crystal-clear waters. Additionally, the route passes by other points of interest, such as the Roca de la Virgen, where a sculpture placed by fishermen commemorates a shipwreck from which they were saved. Participants disembark with water shoes to see it up close. They also stop in front of the small 'Castillo de Calaceite', a miniature artwork created by Danish artist Anton Jensen on the cliffs of Torrox.
"It is a perfect activity whether you have done kayaking before or if it is your first time. An ideal mix of adventure, snorkelling, nature, and relaxation," values Ettore. The company has up to 30 kayaks and paddle surf boards available for rent. The new base in El Playazo offers advantages such as a large parking area nearby and a varied dining offer in the area.
For the residents of Axarquía and tourists visiting the Eastern Costa del Sol, these routes provide an opportunity to experience the coastline from a different perspective, combining sport, history, and nature. Reservations can be made through the Kayak Nerja website.
