The City Council of Antequera has held an Extraordinary Plenary and a public gathering in condemnation of the feminist murder that occurred last Monday, with the reading of a unanimous institutional declaration.
This Wednesday, the City Council of Antequera experienced a day of official mourning with an Extraordinary Plenary and a public gathering in the Plaza de San Sebastián to condemn the feminist murder that took place last Monday in the city. The Municipal Corporation, led by Mayor Manolo Barón, demonstrated its unity in the reading of an institutional declaration.
In the text, the political groups represented in the municipality —PP, PSOE, and IU— expressed their “deepest sorrow, dismay, and firm condemnation” for the death of María, a resident of Antequera. The declaration describes feminist violence as one of the most serious violations of human rights and an attack on the freedom, equality, dignity, and safety of women.
The City Council conveyed its affection and condolences to the victim's family, especially to her parents and children, as well as to her friends. “No words can repair such a cruel loss, but we want you to know that all of Antequera stands by your side and shares your suffering,” the text states.
The Corporation reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating violence against women and called for a firm and coordinated response from administrations and society. The declaration emphasises the need to strengthen policies for prevention, awareness, protection, and comprehensive support for victims, as well as to promote education based on respect and equality.
Mayor Manolo Barón stated that Antequera must respond with “unity, rejection, and condemnation.” In statements to the media, he acknowledged the profound sadness that the murder has caused in the city. “This reality exists and it is harsh. It cannot be denied or manipulated. It is a palpable reality that is fundamentally affecting women,” he asserted.
Barón defended that the fight against feminist violence requires resources, but also “attitudes, education, commitment, unity, legal and judicial firmness, monitoring, and vigilance.” He expressed his concern about the incidence of this violence in the province of Málaga and across the country, urging not to let down their guard.
The mayor highlighted the situation of the victim's children and offered the City Council's collaboration, through Social Services and Childhood, to meet their needs and provide them with the best possible support within municipal competencies.
After the Plenary, the Plaza de San Sebastián hosted a silent gathering of condemnation. The event was attended by the mayor, municipal spokespersons, members of the Corporation, the territorial delegate for Social Inclusion, Youth, Families, and Equality of the Junta in Málaga, Ruth Sarabia, and other territorial delegates. The first deputy mayor and vice president of the Provincial Council, Juan Rosas, was also present.
Additionally, representatives from the Local Police, National Police Corps, Civil Guard, Provincial Fire Consortium, and Civil Protection participated, along with numerous citizens who wanted to express their condemnation and solidarity with the family. The gathering concluded with a minute of silence in memory of María and all women murdered by feminist violence.
