Antequera declares two days of official mourning after the misogynistic murder of a woman

The City Council of Antequera has declared two days of official mourning and has called for a citizens' gathering for this Wednesday following the misogynistic murder of a woman found dead in her home with knife wounds.

The body of the woman, aged 45, was found last Monday in her home in Antequera with knife wounds. The Government Delegation against Gender Violence confirmed that this is a misogynistic murder, raising the number of fatalities due to gender violence in Andalusia to eight so far this year.

Two days of official mourning and flags at half-mast

The mayor of Antequera, Manuel Barón, signed a decree declaring Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 July as official mourning days. During this period, the flag of Antequera will fly at half-mast on all municipal buildings, and a black ribbon will be placed on the flags inside.

Barón, in an official statement, expressed his “strongest condemnation” of the crime and extended his “sincere condolences, affection, and solidarity to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim.” The mayor described misogynistic violence as “the cruelest manifestation of inequality.”

Citizens' gathering and extraordinary plenary session

The citizens' gathering will take place on Wednesday 22 July at 12:00 hours in the Plaza de San Sebastián. The City Council invites all citizens to participate to show their rejection of misogynistic violence and support for the family.

Additionally, an extraordinary plenary session has been called for the same Wednesday, where an Institutional Declaration of condemnation and solidarity will be read and approved. An extraordinary meeting of the local security board will also be held to reinforce institutional coordination.

Unanimous response from the Municipal Corporation

The mayor highlighted that these measures were agreed upon “from the consensus and unity of the entire Municipal Corporation” following a meeting of the spokespersons' board. He thanked the involvement of the Security Forces and Bodies, the judicial authority, health services, and social services that intervened from the very first moment.

Barón also acknowledged the work of the Municipal Centre for Information on Women in Antequera in preventing gender violence and assisting women in situations of violence. “Their work and the coordination between the various administrations are essential to provide a comprehensive and effective response,” he added.

The mayor concluded: “Today Antequera mourns. But it also raises its voice to say, firmly and without ambiguity, that there is no place for misogynistic violence in our society and that no woman should live in fear.”
