Casares hosts two days of Bat Night in September, featuring radiofrequency monitoring workshops and storytelling for children.
The Caxara Speleological Research Society (SIE Caxara) has organised a new edition of Bat Night, which this year will be held at two locations in the municipality of Casares: on Friday 18th September in El Secadero and Friday 25th September in the urban centre. The activity aims to educate the public about the role of these mammals in ecosystems and to dispel false beliefs about them.
The events will begin at 19:30 with participant registration in Plaza de Andalucía (El Secadero) or Plaza de España (Casares town), depending on the date. At 19:45, Alfredo Valencia (SIE Caxara) will give the talk 'Nocturnal Neighbours', and at 20:15 Jorge L. Romo will speak about 'Bats and Biodiversity'.
At 20:45 there will be the storytelling session 'Murci Historias', led by Susana Oda and Begoña Cabrera, aimed at a young audience. The highlight of the event will arrive at 21:15 with a night workshop on locating, identifying, controlling, and monitoring using radiofrequency equipment, where attendees, including children, will be able to participate practically in the study of these animals.
This initiative is part of the Karst 3C Project: Know, Communicate and Share by SIE Caxara and is linked to the International Bat Night 2026 of EUROBATS, a European programme for the promotion and conservation of bats. Collaborating are the Casares Town Hall, the Chiropteran Department of the Doñana Biological Station, UNED, Pablo de Olavide University, SECEMU, SEDECK, and the Cádiz Society of Natural History.
In the urban centre, the conferences will be held in Plaza de España and the echolocation workshop in the parking area of Camino de los Molinos. In El Secadero, all activities will take place in Plaza de Andalucía and its surroundings.
