The Atlantic Mediterranean Technological University celebrated the awarding of 124 scholarships in Málaga, double that of the previous academic year, at an event sponsored by the Unicaja Foundation.
The Atlantic Mediterranean Technological University (Utamed) has doubled its commitment to talent. The academic institution, based in Málaga, awarded 124 scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year, the second since its establishment, at a gala held at the Cultural Centre of the Unicaja Foundation, as reported by Diario Sur.
The grants, called Becas MEM, are aimed at students pursuing official degrees or master's programmes from the university's academic offerings. The selection criteria are based on talent and merit, and in just 21 days, around 5,000 applications were received.
The event was attended by the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre; the president of Utamed, Paco Ávila; oncologist Emilio Alba; the general director of Maskom, Sergio Cuberos, and the president of the Official College of Physicians of Málaga, Pedro Navarro. Canal Sur presenter Toñi Moreno served as the moderator.
The president of the Unicaja Foundation, José Manuel Domínguez, opened the event and defended the value of these scholarships in promoting equal opportunities.
“We believe it is very important to take advantage of the technological environment of the university, which has changed education”, he said. Domínguez added that the mission of Utamed is to serve the “general interest” and build “a democratic and equitable society.”
The rector of Utamed, Juan de Dios Jiménez, stated that the scholarships allow for “democratising access to knowledge.”
“It is never too late to start believing in oneself again. Real life is full of pauses, sacrifices, and detours. A university of the present must adapt to that reality”, he pointed out.
During the gala, three testimonies from scholarship recipients were shared. Concepción Sánchez, who will pursue a Master's in Artificial Intelligence, expressed her gratitude:
“Thank you for understanding that talent does not always have a single path. Thank you for believing in people who may still be building their second career”.
The president of Utamed, Paco Ávila, closed the event and announced that in September the university will start the academic year with over 6,000 enrolled students, of whom 85% are balancing their studies with work and 75% come from municipalities far from traditional university centres.
“We are bringing university education closer to every corner of our land and creating bridges for the human capital of our country to transform their lives”, he affirmed.
The gala included a musical performance by Málaga's Julio Benavente, who sang several songs a cappella.
