The Diocese of Málaga has created a Service for Victim Support and Abuse Prevention, with a lay coordinator and a Jesuit advisor, among other diocesan appointments announced this Friday.

The Diocese of Málaga announced this Friday a series of diocesan appointments, among which stands out the creation of a new Service for Victim Support and Abuse Prevention, as reported by Diario Sur. The service reinforces the work initiated by the previous bishop, Jesús Catalá, with the Child Protection Office.

The new coordinator of the service will be the layperson Juan Carlos Gutiérrez Sánchez, a teacher and linked to the public association of the faithful Missionaries of Hope (MIES), of which he was the lay general responsible for the Spanish Episcopal Conference until June of this year. The Jesuit priest Juan Pablo Rodríguez Gutiérrez will serve as the advisor.

The bishop, José Antonio Satué, had already announced the creation of this department in June. “Aware of the serious harm that any form of abuse causes to victims and their families, especially when the perpetrator is linked to the Church, this new service is born with the purpose of offering attentive and empathetic listening, as well as psychological and spiritual support and legal advice to those in need,” they stated at that time from the diocese. The service will be presented soon.

Additionally, José Carlos Moreno Luque has been appointed as the delegate for Legal Affairs of Brotherhoods and Confraternities; Antonio Fernández López, episcopal delegate for the Cause of Saints; and Germán García Ruiz, advisor to the Episcopal Delegation of Health Pastoral.

In the administrative sphere, Milagros Hurtado de Mendoza Merlo will be the new general coordinator of the Diocesan House, with María Victoria Benítez López and María del Carmen Pulido Rivera as deputy coordinators.
