The public primary school Pablo Ruiz Picasso, located in Málaga, has carried out the renovation of its sports facilities as compensation for the partial occupation of its playground during the works of the first phase of the extension of the Metro de Málaga.
The extension works of the Metro were necessary to use part of the school's backyard, which is bordered by Hilera, Honduras, and Santa Elena streets. The occupation of the playground lasted for two years, from the summer of 2024 until the summer of 2026, when the area was restored and the affected green space was replaced.
Details of the Renovation
As part of the agreement between the Ministry of Development and Mobility and the Territorial Delegation of Education of the Junta de Andalucía, three sports facilities have been renovated in the school's backyard. These include a 710 square metre futsal pitch, a 335 square metre basketball court, and another 175 square metre basketball court, which is equipped with facilities.
The renovation has used the Sportplus system from Composan, a multilayer system that employs acrylic resins, offering a non-slip texture and a continuous finish. This system facilitates the maintenance of the courts.
Málaga Metro Works
The works of the first phase of the extension of Line 2 of the Metro, which covers a distance of 637 metres, include the construction of a station called Hilera. Behind this section, the future Virgen de la Esperanza Hospital will be built.
Additionally, the execution of this infrastructure is coordinated with an archaeological intervention due to the discovery of a Roman necropolis on Hilera street. The works are being co-financed with FEDER funds from the 2021-2027 Operational Programme.
